DEFINITION

Reconstructing two or more literal pieces of information contained in the text.

FEATURES

Pieces can be within two adjacent sentences or scattered throughout the text.
Could be regarded as complex literal.
The knowledge and skills of this type:
− require those of the literal question and, at times, simple inference and/or vocabulary
− specifically require those for joining or grouping relevant information

IMPORTANCE

• Required for both fiction and non-fiction reading.
• Necessary for reading timetables, menus, guides and manuals, and internet searches.
• A vital sub-skill of inference, vocabulary, evaluation & reaction.

MODELS & PRACTICE ITEMS

At each level reorganisation is introduced with single paragraphs.
Models demonstrate joining/grouping separated information.
Practice material in the form of complete texts.
Level Three non-fiction texts have specific topics: history, geography, science,
technology, news, sports news, leisure reviews & advertising

REORGANISATION TYPES

Two main reorganisation types:
1. joined information
merging of interrelated elements found within two or more sentences.
2. grouped information
merging, comparing, listing or counting (totalling) key elements.
Four sub-types:
1. joined with referent (they, these, them, we, it, her, his etc.)
2. grouped with referent
3. grouped with elimination
4. grouped with calculation (assists in reading math problems)
PLUS reorganisation in conversation (direct speech);
using traditional conventions and two modern variations.
