− require those of the literal, vocabulary and, at times, reorganisation questions
− require those for making comparisons & deductions
IMPORTANCE
• Necessary for understanding humour that uses word play, irony, etc.
• A reasonably good general knowledge and vocabulary is needed
• It is a vital sub-skill of vocabulary, evaluation & reaction
MODELS & PRACTICE ITEMS
At each level inference is introduced with single sentences models & practice items
that ask: When, Where, What, Who, Why, followed by practice items.
Level Three texts include: history, geography, science,
technology, news, sports news, leisure reviews & advertising
IMPORTANT SKILLS & KNOWLEDGE
A good working vocabulary − increases the ability to infer and answer questions clearly.
Important skills and knowledge include:
1. The use of referents
2. Matching words/phrases in the questions with synonymous words/phrases in the text
3. Connecting hidden elements with given information to arrive at a reasonable conclusion
4. Knowledge of small, but significant words (adverbs, prepositions, conjunctions, etc.)
5. Understanding writer’s intent
